One of the original trustees of the Christian Church. James Horton was a member of the church of Christ. They remained with the church of Christ when there was a split over the use of musical instruments in worship, those that had musical instruments were the Christian Church. He the Bible and in his later years he would sit under huge trees in his front yard a talk "Bible" with whoever came by to sit with him.
James was farmer/rancher. He owned land in both Fayette County and Lavaca County. He lived near the county line. No doubt he drove cows on the well known cattle trails of Texas. He had a registered cattle brand.
A headstone was placed at his grave, July 2010 by the grandchildren of his daughter, Alcie Dora Horton Smith.
James' wife Sarah Horton (Horton) was his cousin. She moved to Navarro County TX. after James' death to live with her son Thomas Horton. She died there in 1910 and is buried at Prairie Point Cemetery at Bazette TX.
