James GORDON. This was probably James Farquhar Gordon (b. 1818, IGI). Probably James Gordon (1818-97, married Thomazine Crauford) (carmichael.world). James changed his name to James Gordon Oswald when he inherited Scotstoun from Elizabeth Oswald (1767-1864), his great aunt (Old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry). Robert Haldane, WS, was agent for a petition from James Gordon Oswald of Scotstoun, heir, in matters connected with late Miss Elizabeth Oswald of Scotstoun (Glasgow Herald, 1865); the agent Robert (1805-77) was nephew of Robert Haldane (1764-1842) (web, History of Society of Writers to HM Signet). James Gordon Oswald (d. 3jan1897 San Remo), son of Mrs. Haldane Gordon (daughter of Katharine Oswald and Robert Haldane of Airthrey), inherited Scotstoun; James served in 35th Regt, retired and then married (1) Miss Crawford (had child James William Gordon Oswald of Aigas) and (2) a daughter of Mr. Talbot Crosbie of Ardfert Abbey (obituary, Glasgow Herald); Wllm T. Talbot Crosbie of Ardfert Abbey, Ireland, d. 4sep1899, aged 82 (Glasgow Herald). Thomazine Crawford (d. 1881) was daughter of William Crawford of Lakelands, Cork, and mother of James William Gordon Oswald (Armorial Families).
