Ed Garten graduated from Odon High School in 1889. Following graduation he attended the Northern Indiana Normal School from 1893 to 1894 (10 months). Ed then attended Indiana University from 1894 until 1899 when he graduated with an A.B. degree in English. In about 1900 he purchased half-interest in the Washington Gazette of Washington, Indiana. Ed sold his interest in the Washington Gazette to his partner, Paris A. Hastings in January, 1901. He left for Colorado in order to find a climate more agreeable to his health. By February, 1901 Ed was in Rye, Colorado (6500 feet elevation). He reported that there was no cemetery there. The town had one doctor supported by charity. In April and May, 1901 he had moved on to Florence and Salida, Colorado. He left Colorado and was visiting cousins in Hutchinson, Kansas by the beginning of June. By August Ed was back in Odon with much improved health.

In 1905 he attended Indiana University again for three months. In 1906 he attended the University of Chicago for three months. At Harvard University in 1907 he spent 6 weeks taking three courses. As a teacher his record was: (1) Good Hope School in Madison Tp, Daviess Co, IN where he taught all elementary grades for 1895-1896; (2) Elnora High School (1902-1904) where he taught Latin, History, and English and was Principal; (3) Pleasantville High School, Pleasantville, IN (1904-1905) where he taught Latin, mathmatics, English, and history and was Principal ; (4) Jasonville High School, Jasonville, IN (1905-1906) where he taught English, Latin, and History and was Principal; (5) Washington High School, Washington, IN (1906-1910) teaching Algebra and English; (6) Burns City High School, Burns City, IN (1918-1920) was Principal and teaching Latin, English, and History; (7) Odon High School, Odon, IN (1920-1921) teaching Latin, English, and History; (8) Birdseye High School, Birdseye, IN (1921-1923) teaching English and History and was Superintendent. In the Spring term of 1923 he taught English, History, and Rural Education at the Central Normal College in Danville, IN. In 1924-25 he taught school in Florida.
