  James was one of nine first settlers to establish a permanent settlement in what is now Crawford Co., PA.  On May 12, 1788 he camped beneath a wild cherry tree on the bank of French Creek near the present Mercer Street bridge, Meadville, PA.  The next year his father Joseph Fitz Randolph brought the rest of his family to settle there.  James and Charlotte made their home in the county the rest of their lives; on April 1, 1790 they were warned by Indian Flying Cloud of the danger from Western tribe of Indians; women and children hastily gathered in the Block House; next day they were sent by canoes to Ft. Hamilton guarded by twelve braves of the friendly Indian Chief, Half Moon.  James was veteran of War of 1812-14.
