James Ewing (5dec1775 Glasgow-29nov1853 Glasgow) became Provost of Glasgow in 1832; in 1853 he acquired the property of Levenside in Dunbartonshire and altered the name to Strathleven; after his death Strathleven passed to his nephew, son of his sister Jane, who added the name Ewing to his surname Crum (Provosts of Glasgow). James left Strathleven, subject to his widow's liferent, to his nephew, Humphrey (Old Glasgow Exhibition). James bought Strathleven in 1835; his relict d. there 14jun1896, aged 83 (Glasgow Herald, Old Glasgow Exhibition, notes and indexes). The late Jane Tucker Ewing was mentioned in Glasgow Herald (jul1896). Strathleven Hse (originally called Levenside) was built abt 1700, was inherited abt 1900 by Alexander, nephew of James Ewing; the last (female) member of the Crum Ewing family married into the Hamilton family, which in 1997 lived in Lowood, Melrose, Roxburghs., where books and furniture from Strathleven were kept; the family retained property in Jamaica (google). In 1851 James Ewing (1776 Glasgow, JP landowner), wife Jane (1815 Pt Glasgow, Renfrews.), were at Strathleven Mansion Hse, Cardross, Dunbartonshire (census). In 1861 Jane Tucker Ewing (1812 Port Glasgow, land proprietrix) was at Strathleven mansion hse, Bonhill, Dunbartons. (census). In 1895 Mrs. Jane Tucker Ewing was owner occupier of Strathleven, Dumbarton (Valuation Roll). Mrs Jane Tucker Ewing nee Crawford (1813-1900) was wife of James Ewing (1775-1853) (web); Humphrey Ewing Crum Ewing (b. 1802) inherited Strathleven from his uncle James (Erskine Halcro Genealogy).
