RESIDENCE: Part of Tazewell Co., including the part around Knox Creek, became Buchanan Co., VA. After James &Sarah married they moved over the state line into Buchanan Co., Virginia where James had 70 acres of land suveyed 27 Sept 1823 on Knox Creek. (Russell Co., VA, Surveyors Book 1; 121, No. 16 & 17 Land Office Treasury Warrant No. 7195, dated 25 Feb 1822). James is listed again in the Tax List of Russell Co., VA, 20 Apr 1826 where he continues to be listed through 1834. James Estep applied for bounty land for his service in the War of 1812 on 10 Mar 1851. Sarah Estep as James' widow applied for bounty land on 4 Sep 1856. From this it shows James to have died 8 Oct 1852 at his home in Tazewell Co., now Buchanan Co. and probably on Knox Creek.

MILITARY SERVICE: James served in the War of 1812 in the company commanded by Captain John Goodall in the Fourth Regiment of the Militia commanded by Col. Byas from 1 Nov 1813 until honorable discharged at Georgetown the last day of Jul 1814.

MARRIED: James married at least three times. A son from his first marriage is Shadrach, born abt 1809 in VA or TN and married to Ruth Wilson 8 Oct 1829 in Ashe Co.,NC. Shadrach is believed to be a son of James because he lived near James on the 1850 Tazewell Co., VA, census and remained near the other sons throughout his life. On the 1880 Buchanan Co. census, Shadrach lists his father as born in NC and his mother born in VA. (GFD)

TAX LIST: Russell Co., VA. James is listed with 3 white tithables over age of 16 in 1803, which would indicate he was married before 1787.

CENSUS: 1830: no record found for James; 1840: Tazewell Co., VA, with son Shadrach, both on p. 15. James' age listed as 70-80, Sarah as 40-50. They are shown as having six children whose ages work out right for William, Anderson, Louisa, James, Sarah Ann, and Ruth. 1850: Tazewell Co., VA. House #947 James Estep is age 83, born MD, and Sarah age 55 born TN. Ruth is still at home, age 15. House # 944 is Uriah and Lucinda Estep and family. House # 948, William & Sarah Estep & family. House #950 Shad & Ruth Estep & family. 1860: Sarah Estep, age 60, a widow, living with Jonathon and Rutha Hurley in house # 725 in Pike Co., KY. 1870: Sarah Estep, age 72,
