2. Copied from page 457 of the History of Audrain County, Missouri: J. PAYNE and LESLIE H. ELLIS James Payne Ellis and Leslie Elizabeth Hansbrough were married February 3, 1940, in Wellsville. They began their married life on a farm near Laddonia, where he was farming and she taught at Black School. Payne was born in 1913, in Audrain County, near Thompson, the sixth child of Octave F. Ellis and Frances M. Canterbury. Payne's father and mother were both born in Audrain County. Leslie was born in 1918 in Marion County, near Palmyra, the sixth child of Frank L. Hansbrough and Rose L. Young. Leslie's mother and father were both born in Marion County, near Palmyra. Payne and Leslie had three sons, James Leslie, Jack Payne, and Jerry Warren. After graduating from Community R-VI at Scotts Corner, all three enlisted in the U.S. Navy, married, and moved out of Missouri. Payne died from a heart attack on the farm in 1969, at the age of fifty- five. Leslie continued teaching at Community R-VI until she retired after twenty-five years of teaching in that system. In 1977, she married William E. Skinner of Anderson, South Carolina.

Copied from the 10 Jan1969 issue of the Mexico Ledger: Heart Attack Is Fatal To J.P.Ellis James Payne Ellis, 56, well-known Audrain County farmer and stockman died unexpectedly late yesterday afternoon after returning home from St. Louis where he attended the funeral of his sister, Mrs. Ruth Ellis Brockman, following with burial in East Lawn Memorial Park. With other members of the family, he was sitting at the dinner table at his home of Route 1, Laddonia,when he was stricken with a heart attack and died at 4:30 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Arnold funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Marvin Jones, pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, and the Rev. Homer Martin, pastor of Laddonia Baptist Church. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Son of Octave F. and Frances Canterberry Ellis, Mr. Ellis was born at Thompson on March 2, 1913. He was educated in the Audrain County schools and University High School in St. Louis. On Feb. 3, 1940, he was married in Wellsville to Leslie Hansbrough, who survives at the home. A member of the Laddonia Baptist Church, Mr. Ellis was a veteran of World War II. He had spent most of his life in Audrain County, and was active in various local and civic affairs. Survivors include his wife, three sons, James Leslie Ellis of Jackson- ville, Fla., Jerry Warren Ellis, who is attending Northeast Missouri State College in Kirksville, and Jack Payne Ellis of the home; two brothers, A. Ellis and Francis Ellis of Laddonia; and a sister, Mrs. Mildred McDaniel of Sunray, Texas.
