Jim enlisted in the US Army Signal Corp in 1942. Basic training was in Fort Monmoth. Then to Camp Beal, North of Sacramento, for six months of training. Then he was shipped overseas to Oran in Algiers, North Africa for 3 months. From there he took a boat to Naples, Italy. Enroute their ship went aground in the Straits of Sicily, with the German subs lurking nearby. Next Jim was sent to Marsailles, France. Jim worked as a carrier repeater, using cyphered code.

Jim and his wife Ruth lived on a farm in Ontario, New York all of his adult life.
