Daugherty was the second oldest of two son's born to a William Daugherty-III and his wife Elizabeth nee Harber Daugherty. James was born in Lee County, Virginia on 15 October, 1811 and married Nancy Flanery on 23 September, 1834 in Lee County, Virginia. Together they had a total of fourteen children: Charles Daugherty; James F. Daughertywho married a Susan M. Flanary; John P. Daugherty who married a Catherine "Kitty" Vance; William Monroe Daugherty who was married to a Theresa Elvereda Shanks; Rachel Maria Daugherty who married a W. Edson; Thomas J. Daugherty; Sarah Ann Daugherty; Nancy Jane Daugherty; Garner Daugherty who was married to a Labona Hendre; Joshua Daugherty; Rebecca Emaree Daugherty; Mary L. Daugherty; Charles M. Daugherty; and lastly a Archibald "Arch" C. Daugherty. 4.
