Gazette, The (Cedar Rapids-Iowa City, IA) - November 3, 1999 James C. Curtis,74, formerly of Bernard, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, in the Monticello Nursing and Rehab Center after a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen. Burial: church cemetery, with military rites. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be rosaries at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Survivors include a son, Joseph of Estherville; a daughter, Theresa of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three sisters, Charlene (Florian) Herrig of St. Donatus and Marie (Laverne) Ambrosy and Eleanor Curtis, both of Dubuque; and three brothers, Gary of Yula City, Calif., Larry (Pat) of Princeton and Allan (Helen) of Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steve; two brothers, John and Ronnie; and a sister, Bernadine Manemann. Born Dec. 5, 1924, in Bernard, Iowa, he was the son of Michael and Ruth Johnson Curtis. He was a graduate of the former St. Patrick's High School in Garryowen. He farmed in the Bernard area and then was employed at Door Electric until his retirement. He was a member of St. Patrick's Parish in Anamosa and Anamosa Knights of Columbus Council 1791. James was a World War II Army veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart. Rosaries will be recited by the parish and Anamosa Knights of Columbus. Military rites will be provided by Cascade American Legion Post 528. A James C. Curtis Memorial Fund has been established. Image Gallery
