Parents are unknown. The death certificate of his son William says he was born in Montgomery County, but this is the only source suggesting as such. He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Floyd on April 1, 1841, officiated by Rev. Jacob Gruber, pastor of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church outside of Eaton. He was a farmer. He died of smallpox.
