James H. Conklin, son of Benjamin and Harriet Conkling was born around 1836 in Vandalia, Indiana. He married Aurelia Richey, daughter of John and Mariah Ritchey on 28 February 1856 in Cambridge City. The 1860 census shows James, Aurelia, and son Charles living in Cambridge City. James lists his occupation as beefman. The Kansas stte census shows the family living in Mission, Brown County, Kansas.

James is mentioned as deceased in his father’s probate records. The probate record names James's widow, Aurelia and sons Charles and George. Neither of James’s sons are mentioned in the later obituaries or will of his James’s younger brother and sisters.
