  James arrived in 1682 on the "Providence" with his father, William Carter, and his step-mother Katherine, Wm's second wife (he later had a third wife, Mary)  James, born in 1675, was the son of Wm. and his first wife who seems to be unknown.  When James married Susannah Griffith, his father bought him a farm in Bucks Co., PA and some cattle with the understanding that he would not receive any of his (Wm) estate at his death.
  James and Susannah were Quakers from Bucks Co., PA.  Their son's Joseph, Benjamin, James and Richard came down to Orange Co., VA (later Fredericks County), probably with Alexander Ross and Morgan Bryan.
