Facts and Events
According to his great-grandson, Joseph R. Carlisle, Sr., James Cooper Carlisle, the elder, was found drown in a canal near his home. The family suspected he was murdered because of his union activities (he was a coal miner). RMC 12/27/2011 Notes for James C. Carlisle: Compiled by Eva Carlisle Strawn, and submitted by Judy Doll Scott, April 1996: "Scotland was having a famine in 1884, and they also had no religious, so James C. Carlisle came to the United States. When they docked in New York on July 4, 1884, they were having a celebration and had fireworks. He thought that the United States was at war. He sent for his family two years later. James C. Jr, was five years old when he came to the United States. James C. Carlisle, Sr. was a Methodist minister and preached on the streets of New York. He was a very well-read man, and the miners in Goshen sent him to Columbus to help organize the United Mine Workers Union. He slept on park benches to save money. When he came home he had 35 cents left and he gave it back to the Union Fund. He was the tenth member to join the Union. He was married to Elizabeth who was born in 1855 and died in 1918." Note: Cousin to RC that James Cooper Carlisle was not murdered for his union activities but that a person confessed to killing him years later (in California?) Image Gallery
