[] !John Paul wrote that James was the "second son to reach maturity, was born 4 Feb 1690. (The Abingdon Register gives his birth date as 4 Feb 1689, which date is Julian Calendar). He inherited King's Creek Plantation, York Co, and married Mary Armistead in 1711. James Burwell founded the "King's Creek" or second major branch of the Burwell family." He was a citizen of Virginia Colony, and a member of the House of Burgesses April 1718. In "Burwell Kith and Kin of the Immigrant Lewis Burwell", Stuart Brown, Jr. wrote: James "made his home in York County on the York River at "King's Creek"... In 1709 he was referred to as Major and in 1711 he was charged with Mann Page I of "Rosewell", John Grymes and Ralph Wormeley for a riot committed. A Burgess from York County in 1715 and 1718, he was described as "a gay, pleasure loving, spirited, rollicking and rather reckless young man, who enjoyed life for the amusements it had to offer- games, drinks, wagers, parties".
