Facts and Events
From Colonial Families of Anne Arundel County, Maryland On or about 5 July 1776, James Barnes, of Adam, was one of several inhabitants of Anne Arundel County who sent a petition to the Convention of Maryland, stating that militia companies are "indifferently provided with arms," and asking to be allowed to form an independent militia rifle company, limited to eighty, and with the right to choose their own officers, except under fire. The petitioners felt this would save the state 1,000 pounds. (CMSP, The Red Books, No. 4, Part 3, Item 15) On 31 July 1786, James Barnes of Adam advertised for sale 305 acres of land in Anne Arundel County, on the upper part of Elk Ridge, near Poplar Spring Chapel. In Sep 1792, he was appointed Constable of Upper Fork Hundred. (Maryland Journal and Baltimore Advertiser, 21 July 1786; Anne Arundel County Judgment Records Court for September 1792:226) In the chancery case, "Ellicott vs. George and Adam Barnes," George Shipley deposed that, after James Barnes gave land to his three sons, he came to live with the said Shipley.
