James Bankston married Levisa McDonald. They lived in Clark County, Arkansas and later moved to Hot Spring County, Arkansas. They eventually settled in Red River County, Texas near the Clarksville/Annona/English area.

Old Miller County, Arkansas was created April 1, 1820 by the Arkansas Territorial Legislature. It included much of what is southeastern Oklahoma and the northeastern counties in Texas (Bowie, Red River, Lamar, Fannin, Cass, Morris, Titus, Franklin, Hopkins, Delta and Hunt). Red River County was created in 1836 (Organized in 1837) after it became part of the Republic of Texas.
