James Alcorn obituary, Stillwater Messenger, July 14, 1900

James Alcorn, 72 years if age, residing on his farm near Carnelian lake, in the town of May, died at his home at five o'clock Sunday afternoon from heart disease and a general breaking down of health incidental to old age. Mr. Alcorn was pioneer settler of the county, locating near the present homestead in the early '50s, and by his many years of thrift had become owner of as handsome a little farm as can be found in that section of the county. He fought in the Indian outbreak under Gen. Sibley and was also a veteran of the civil war, enlisting in Co. K, 2d U.S. cavalry. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon by Rev. John Pemberton and the remains were interred at Fairview cemetery at Stillwater.

James Alcorn was born in Indiana county, Pennsylvania, January 15, 1830. At the age of 25 he came to Minnesota and located near here, residing in this immediate vicinity ever since, excepting during the time he was away at the war.

A widow and seven grown children survive him, for sons and three daughters: John, residing at Stillwater; William, on the farm next adjoining the family homestead; Chas. at Vinton, Iowa and James living at home; Mrs. Ezra Root of Stillwater; Mrs. Chas. Friedel of Chokio and Mrs. Chas Drake of Moorhead.

Alcorn, Date of Filing: 1900 July 30 in Minn. Enrolled in Marine Mills, Washington, Minn on 31 Dec 1863 as a private at age 33 in Company K, 2nd Cavalry Regiment Minnesota Volunteers in the Civil War and was honorably discharged at Fort Snelling, Minn on 04 May 1866.   Oct 21, 1890 - James Alcorn, age 61, resident of Marine, Washington, MN; is filing for original pension as he is wholy unable to earn a support by reason of age & general disability & failing eyesight.
  Jan 8, 1891 - states that James Alcorn is 61 years and that while at Fort Snelling in MN in the Spring of 1864 he contracted Eye disease there which resulted in partial blindness from the exposure and hardships os the service and has suffered from the same and effects thereof more or less ever since. He was treated in the hospitals as follows: at Fort Ripley Miinesota.
   Nov 14, 1893 - James Alcorn personal description, age 66, height 5 ft 10 1/2 inches, fair complexion,  hair grey (formerly brown), blue eyes. He has been a farmer since leaving the service. States that while in the military at Fort Snelling in May of 1864 he contracted disease of eyes. While at Forts Snelling, Ripley, Ridgley & ? in 1865 contracted disease of rectum but it commenced gradually in 1864/65 and at Fort Ripley in March 1865 received injury of privates(cannot give exact day) was injured on drill, was not treated in hospital but was treated in quarters by surgeon for surgery to privates while at Fort Ripley.
  Jan 1897 - James Alcorn states that Feb 1865 at Fort Ripley he was injured in the privates by being thrown onto the horn of his sadle. That he was tken with sore eyes while stationed at St. Snelling but they became better until he went on the paymastersd escort from Ft Abercrombie to Ft Wadsworth ? and on the 13th day of Feb 1866 they were caught in a blizzard and they were in an ? ? when ? ? almost blinded affiant. This was the time that Capt Fired(?) and men were frozen and other men of his regiment perished (?). That affiants eyes were almost useless and only on clear days with the aid of strong glasses is he able to ? at all and at other times can only see enough to get about comfortably and cannot go about at night at any ? ?.   April 28, 1897 - states that James Alcorn is 68 years.
  Nov 17, 1897 - granted a pension certificate at rate of $8 per month for partial inability to earn a support by manual labor due to impaired vision of both eyes, disease of rectum, right ? hernia, loss of teeth, age & general debility, disease of bladder, senility, & disease of heart.
  July 5, 1898 - states that James Alcorn is married to Sarah J Alcorn, maiden name Sarah Jane Hinds, married on July 4, 1860 in Stillwater, MN  with Rev. St. Clair officiating, certificate as proof. James Alcorn was previously married to Mariah Fee, death Indianna, Pennslvania. Children living: Emma May b. June 16, 1861; Margret Elen b. June 30, 1863; Jennie b. Nov 23, 1865; William b. Dec. 25, 1867; Charles b. Ag 23, 1870, James R. b. Oct 18, 1880.
  May 19, 1899 - Soldiers Application for Increase ... because of disability as described: disease of eyes and rectum, injury of testicles, general debility and debility naturally due to age. Signed by James Alcorn.
  Sep 1899 - James Alcorn states: I incurred hernia on the right side in February 1865 while on drill at Fort Ripley, Minnesota. while riding at a great speed and the horse coming to a sudden stop by the blowing of the bugle. It was not caused by any fault or neglect of mine neither was it due to any 

vicious habits. I am confident that my disability is of a permanent character. Signed by James Alcorn.

  Sep 1899 - Affidavits from George Holt and Swen Hassler stating James Alcorns character and knowledge of injuries. Swen says that he worked with James Alcorn in 1857 on the St. Croix River Rafting Pine Logs thru the whole summer and that later in life James Alcorn broke his leg while working in the Pineries.
  Jan 1900 - Physicians Affidavit by Dr A. Soderlind(?) that states he operated on James Alcorn for hernia on July 9th 1899.
  Apr 1900 - Affidavit of Claimant: The fracture of the left leg which occurred July 22nd 1869 caused by horse falling on him was not caused by any vicious habits either directly or indirectly. As to when heart trouble first commenced cannot tell but did not notice it much until after the accident when I received the fracture of the leg. There was no one with me at the time my leg was broken except my boy two or three years old. My ribs were broken on my left side caused by falling from a  load of logs in the woods and was not caused from vicious habits as I have always been a sober industrious man. Signed by James Alcorn.
  July 8 1900 - Pensioner, James Alcorn, who was last paid at $6 to July 1900 has been dropped because of death.
  July 14, 1900 - Declaration for Widow's Pension. Sarah J Alcorn, wife of James, maiden name Sarah Jane Hinds, age 56 years, states that James Alcorn died 8 July 1900 in the Town of May. Signed by Sarah Jane Alcorn and witnesssed by C.A. Lammers & Emma Root (dau).
  July 18, 1900 - General Affidavit by Francis Herestis (?) resident of Barnum, Carlton, MN,  says that she is 59 years of age. That she is the SISTER of the wife of James Alcorn who died on the 8th day of July 1900 after a sickness of many weeks duration. That she assisted her sister in the care of her husband during his last sickness and was present at the time of the death of said James Alcorn and attended the funeral. 
  That she is familiar with the estate of deceased which comprised a small amount of farm stock and old farm machinery also an 80 acre farm so cut up by ravines and washouts as to be of very little value. That there is a mortgage on said farm for seven hundred dollars ($700) drawing interest at 10%. That after the payment of interest, taxes, etc. that the widow will have no income save that derived from the labor of her own hands.
  That affiant is now the only ? ? witness to the marriage of the said James Alcorn and affiants sister, Sarah Jane, That said marriage was performed by the Rev. W H St. Clair at Stillwater, Minn on the 4th day of July 1860 in the presence of affiant and Mrs. St. Clair That said Minister and wife are both dead to the best of affiants knowledge and belief. That the maiden name of affiants sister was Sarah Jane Hinds under which name she was married. That said sister had not been married prior ot her marriage to the said James Alcorn nor has she remarried since his death.
  That said sister is in destitute circumstances and actually needs a pension for her suppoort.

  July 21, 1900 - Charles H Brown, auditor of Washington co., MN states that Personal property appraised or assessed value of $158. Real Estate located in said town of Grant, lot No Seven(7) and the south East quarter of the Nort East quarter all of section No. twenty-six(26) Township thirty-one (31) North of Range Twenty (20) ? of the assessed value of $1089.
                   Charles Lammers, Register of Deeds in Washington co, MN certify that there is of records in the office of said register of deeds a mortgage against the above described property in Book No Fourteen (14) of Mortgage on p 554 for the sum of eight Hundred and forty ($840) dollars comprising a seven hundred dollar principal note and interest note for one hundred and forty dollar.
  July 30, 1900 - widows pension rate is $8 per month.
  Feb 26, 1901 - Application for Accrued Pension by Widow. States that James Alcorn died 8 July 1900 and Sarah lives in May, Washington, MN. Signed by Sarah J Alcorn and witnessed by George HInds & H Hanson.
  Feb 26 1901 - Letter written by Sarah J Alcorn states that James Alcorn was previously married to one named Maria Fees, who died abt the year 1859 month of February. That Sarah has not been married  previously nor since James Alcorn death, with whom she lived to the day of his death.
  That the character, location and value of all property, real, personal or mixed, including bonds, sticks, and investments, owned by her or in which she has had any interest since filing above claim and the full amount of her annual income is as follows:
  Of stocks, bonds, investments and money - nothing. That she is the residary legatee of her late husband whose estate comprised a homestead of some 85 acres on the shore of Carnelian Lake in the town of May in said county which was encumbered with a mortgage for $700 at 10% interest on the death of her husband. Said mortgage yet remains unpaid. That said farm as been so badly cut up by washouts and ravines of late years as to seriously impair its value. The soil of said farm is of such a nature as to yeild readily to the ? of rain and running water so that when said washouts once get started they rapidly increase in size.
  That the other estate of said deceased (personal) consisted of household furniture old and worn out worth about $25. An old mare afflicted with hearrs (?). 3 cows 4 yearlings 2 hogs and forty chickens, a few old and worn out pieces of farm machinery the whole outfit not worth two hundred dollars. That affiant has sold most of said stock to raise money to pay funeral expenses and expenses of last sickness of her late husband. That during past season by reason of drowth said farm has yielded no crops and that there has not been income enough to pay interest and taxes. And that in ordinary years said farm furnishes a bare subsistance.
  That affiant has not now, not has she had any income since the death of her late husband.
  That there is no one legally bound to provide for her support since filing claim July 30th 1900.

   March 1901 - Letter written by Lucinda Campbell states that she has been a resident of May, Washington, MN for the last 40 years. She knew and was well acquainted with the late James Alcorn of the town of May. States that since the close of the war James Alcorn & surviving wife Sarah J Alcorn have also been residents of said town and up to the day of his death lived together as man and wife. James Alcorn was married previous to Sarah J to affiants twin sister Maria Fee. That said sister died at her old home county ? Indianna in the State of Pennsylvania in the month of January A.D. 1859 as affiant was informed by relatives, which information was confirmed during a visit by affiant to her old home in said Indianna County a few years ago. Signed by Lucinda Campbell and witnessed by Henry DeWolf, Town clerk of the Town of May, Washington Co. Minn.
  March 1901 - Letter written by John A Alcorn states that he now is and ever since the year of 1867 has been a resident of Washington county, MN, that he is now 48 years of age, he is the son of the late James Alcorn of Washington co., MN and the stepson of Sarah Jane Alcorn, the survving wife. That James Alcorn and affiant's mother were married in the county of Indianna, State of Penn. That her maiden name was Maria Fee. That his said parents came to the State of MN abt the year of 1854 where a twin sister of affiants mother resided. That said James Alcorn took a farm in Polk County, Wisconsin where he resided until the failing health of affiant's mother caused a return to their former home in Pennsylvania where affiant's mother died at the home of the father of the said James Alcorn in the village of Washington in said county of Indianna and state of Pennsylvania. Affiant remembers distictly the death of his mother and attending her funeral and seeing the dead body. That said death occurred in the month of February in the year 1859.
  That after the death of affiant's mother affiant made his home with his grandparents both paternal and maternal, living a portion of the time with one and then with the other. Said grandparents living about four miles apart in said Indianna County. That he continued so to reside until about 15 years of age and during that time frequently visited the grave of his mother.
  That affiant's father returned to Minnnesota shortly after the death of affiant's mother where in the year of 1860 as affiant has been informed and verily believes he married Sarah Jane Hinds who is now his surviving wife. When affiant arrived in Minnesota he made his home for a few months with his father and the said Sarah Jane his wife. That ever since affiant has lived in the same neighborhood and knows of his own knowledge that the said James Alcorn and the said Sarah Jane Alcorn lived together as man and wife to the day of the death of said James Alcorn and that the said Sarah Jane Alcorn has not remarried since the death of the said James Alcorn.
  Further affiant knows that three sons and three daughters are the issue of said marriage. Affiant further says that his father left a farm of some 80 acres which he is informed and believes in encumbered and also left a small amount of personal property, further that said stepmother has no other real estate or means of income than her interest in said estate of the late James Alcorn.

  June 29, 1901 - General Affidavit by George P Hinds a resident of Town of May, County of Washington, State of Minn. whose address is Stillwater, Route No. 1 and age 56 years, states that he is the brother of Sarah J. Alcorn the widow of said soldier. That said sister is a little over one year older than affiant. That affiant knows of his own knowledge that his said sister had not been previously married before her marriage to the said James Alcorn. That said sister was about sixteen or seventeen year sold when so married to James Alcorn as aforesaid. Signed by George P. Hinds and witnessed by Frank T Wilson, Judge of Probate.
  July 16, 1901 - General Affidavit by Amos H Hill a resident of May, Washington, MN; is 53 years old, has no interest in said claim; he has been a resident of Washington County for 46 years (except for a sort time in Iowa) and during all that time he has been personally acquainted with deceased soldier and his widow Sarah J Alcorn the claimant herein. That said parties visited home of affiant frequently before and after their marriage. That they were near neighbors at the time of said marriage, which marriage occurred to best of affiants recollection in 1859 or 1860, at which time the said Sarah J Alcorn whose maiden name was HInds, was a young girl and to best of affiants knowledge had never been previously married. Affiant distinctly remembers a visit at his home of said Alcorn and said Sarah J Hinds on a Sunday prior to their marriage and his thoughts that a girl so young should marry one seemingly so much older.  Jul 26, 1916 - states that widows pension being paid at $12 to Apr 4, 1916 has been dropped from the roll because of death Apr. 17, 1916. (Death of Sarah J Alcorn).
