In 1868 about fifty German speaking families attending Saint Vincent DePaul Church petitioned Bishop John Henry Luers for a church of their own. The Rev. Jacob Mayer, pastor of Saint Vincent’s assumed the task of organizing the parish. Lots were purchased next to the Cullen House, a hotel, and work on the construction of the church began in the fall of 1868. The church built of brick, 40 X 80 feet had a seating capacity of about 300 and cost $4,300. The Cullen House on Second and Market streets was a three story brick building purchased by the Rev. George A. Hamilton in 1862 and at that time flourishing in Lafayette. It served as school and convent for Saint Vincent’s parish. This building now became the headquarters of the new parish, and a cottage near Saint Vincent’s became the residence for the teaching sisters at Saint Vincent’s. The church of Saint Joseph was dedicated by Bishop Luers on 2 February 1870 and several months later Father Mayer was transferred to the Chicago diocese.
In 1869 Father Mayer erected a brick school on the parish property a short distance to the west of Saint Vincent’s church. The new school opened in September 1870 with the sisters of the Holy Cross in charge. This was Saint Vincent’s Boys Institiute; a two story brick building
