Jacob Hooper was born on 2nd July 1822 in the parish of Stoke Damerel in Devon, son of a tailor named Jacob Hooper and his wife Charity. Young Jacob was baptised when he was about a month old at the the Morice Street Wesleyan Chapel in Plymouth Dock, the main town in Stoke Damerel parish, which would be renamed Devonport two years later.
Jacob's next sighting is in 1841, when he was working as a servant at a farm in Bere Ferrers, a few miles north of Stoke Damerel. Five years later he was married there to Mary Drake. After their marriage, Jacob and Mary lived with her widowed father at Monkeys Castle, a cottage on the road between Bere Ferrers and Bere Alston, appearing there in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses, with Jacob working as an agricultural labourer. Jacob and Mary appear to have had at least six children together, and Jacob also acted a stepfather to a daughter Mary had before their marriage.
Some time between 1861 and 1871 Jacob, Mary, their children and Mary's father all moved a short distance from Monkeys Castle to Wattons (now called Wottens) Farm, where Jacob was described as the farmer.
Mary died in 1880, aged 60. Jacob continued living at Wattons Farm with his daughter Amelia, and later also with her husband Alfred Whitting and children.
Jacob died in 1902, aged 79.
