Mary Drake was baptised on 11th June 1819 at Bere Ferrers in Devon, daughter of Mary Drake, formerly Harris, and her husband John Drake, a husbandman. Young Mary was the third of the couple's seven children. In 1832, when Mary was thirteen years old her mother died.

In about 1839 Mary appears to have had a daughter named Mary Jane Drake. The 1841 census finds Mary and her daughter living with her father and brother in Bere Ferrers.

Mary was married on 8th April 1846, aged 26, to a husbandman named Jacob Hooper. Mary's cousin Celia Spry (her father's sister Mary's daughter) was one of the witnesses to the marriage and her father John was the other witness. Mary and Jacob appear to have had six children together. They stayed living in the parish of Bere Ferrers, appearing in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living with Mary's father at Monkeys Castle. By 1871 Jacob was describing himself as a farmer of 15 acres and they were living at Wattens Farm in Bere Ferrers.

In 1877 Mary's father John died.

Mary died in 1880, aged 60. She was buried at Bere Ferrers on 16th March 1880. Jacob survived her by 22 years and continued living at Wattons Farm with their daughter Amelia.
