Granted a Civil War Pension by the Act of June 27th, 1890. Enrolled as a private in Co.B, 141st OVI (National Guard) in May 1864, and was honorably discharged 3 Sep 1864 at Gallipolis, OH. Personal description at age 56 was 5ft. 10 inches tall, dark complexion, dark hair, dark eyes, and disabled in the following manner: "that he is now suffering from a severe injury of left hand, a hernia on right side, and heart disease. That he believes the disability to be permanent and that he served more than ninety days in the U.S. Service." There is an affidavit signed in Athens County, State of Ohio for pension claim #1032789 for Jacob J. Hoodlet, aged 56, residing at Nelsonville, Ohio that states: "On the 3 day of July 1889 while working at my drilling machine in my blacksmith shop in Nelsonville, Ohio, drilling a piece of iron I got my hand caught in the cogs of the drill and the cogs of the drilling machine ground the second finger of my left hand to a pulp. So it had to be amputated at a little above the knuckle joint. It also injured and mashed my index finger and my third finger of my said left hand so that they are both stiff in there joints so I am not able to close my hand." Another affidavit signed at age 60 stated that he suffered a hernia while using his drill press to repair a printing press in his blacksmith shop about May 1881. A physical examination resulting in granting him 4/18th rating for the disability shows that his pulse was 108, respiration 19, height 5 ft. 9 inches, and weight 150 at age 56. Examined at age 61 his pulse was 100, respiration 36, temperature 99-1/2, height 5 ft. 9 inches, weight 150. |
