    Jacob Bumgarner was born about 1767 Augusta County, Virginia (now Germany Valley, Pendleton Co., WV), son of Godfrey and Gertrude (Courtwright?) Bumgardner, and died 1823 in Wood County, Virginia (now Wirt Co., WV). He married in Harrison County, Virginia (now WV) on February 12, 1795 to Sarah Wilson, possibly daughter of Joseph and Mary (Carr) Wilson. They were parents of five known children: Lydia Eliza, Jacob II, George, Jesse, and Joel. Census records indicate a total of eight children, 6 males and 2 females..

    Jacob along with his brothers, Frederick and Andrew were early pioneers in the part of Wood Co., Va, which later became Wirt Co., VA in 1848 (1863 WV). He is buried by his wife on the old Bumgarner farm of Jacob III, his grandson, at Mingo Bottom near Wells Lock , Elizabeth, Wirt County, West Virginia.

    Jacob was often referred to as Jacob I, his son Jacob as Jacob II and his son Jacob as Jacob III.
