Last Muster Roll Same Co.A. 22nd Ms. Inf. Dated August 31.1864 to Feb.28,1865 Period-3 years Remarks-DIED IN HOSPITAL Copyist-F. Donahue

There is no location of hospital or exact date of death. I assume he died Feb 28, 1865. That is terrible to have lived thru the war and get killed late. The researcher at the Archives made these two notations; No Pension Application Found No Grave Registration Found.

His wife after remarrying in 1865 did not file for a pension in his name. I know that there was one widow of a McGuffee in Lawrence County, filed for her husband's pension after she married William Jasper Armstrong (founder of Arm, Ms.) Jasper filed on his service and she filed on McGuffee's. I have pulled down the battle information on 22nd Ms. Inf. and I am trying to find out where they were on Feb. 28, 1865. So far, the best I can tell, the 22nd was in Ga. and was ordered to the Carolina's. I am a little confused about the desertion bit but was told by a Civil War Hist. that often the men who were captured or wounded and were not there to answer the roll call were classified as deserted or A.W.O.L. even though they were not. The communications were so poor that they never really knew where the men were or what happened to them. Unless they knew them personally. The 22nd was organized in July ,1861 of companies formerly in State service and were mustered into the Confederate service for 3 years. It was known for a short time as "Bonham' Regt. Ms. Vol. About April 9,1865 the Regt. was consolidated with the 1st and 33rd Regt and the 1st Batt. Ms. Inf. and formed a new Regt. which was designated the 22nd Regt. Ms. Inf. As you can see there was a lot of record changing so that could also answer the questions on his being absent with out leave. This man was Old Jesse's son and he and his wife lived with the old man in 1860. But I had often wondered what happened to him and his wife. The question is answered but as in many of these puzzles there are other questions raised.
