13 Feb 2014, Helen & RC discussed Helen's first cousin, Jack Devoe. Unbeknownst to Helen or RC, Jack had died two days earlier. Since that time we have ascertained that the Jack G. Devoe, who died 11 Feb 2014, in Cookeville, Tennessee, is Helen's first cousin. Several years ago (5 or more), Jack drove to Ohio from California and made it a point to stop to see Helen. She thinks she hadn't seen him for 40 or more years; and she did not see or hear from him after that visit.
Jack's mother, Myrtle "Helen" Haines, and Helen's father, Harley Osborne Haines, were siblings, children of Julian and Lottie Troup Haines. Harley was the eldest, then Walter "Raymond," then Myrtle "Helen," the only girl.
Sometime after the 1910 census, Lottie left her husband and children. She died in 1912.
After Lottie left, Julian quit his job working on the railroad and took a job as a caretaker at a children's home. Harley didn't want to go to the home and was bound out the the O'Bannion family in Newark. Either then, or sometime afterwards, Helen went to live with the Gates, on a farm outside of Greenwich in Huron County. She was raised as their daughter and took their surname. But Julian would not sign the papers releasing custody of Helen and, as the story goes, she was not to learn until after their deaths, that she was never adopted by the Gates.
Harley named his eldest daughter in honor of his sister, Helen. Helen, the younger, and Jack were the same age. When Helen was around 13, she visited Jack's family on their farm next to the Gates' farm. When Jack's sister, Noreen, was killed while riding her bike in 1944, Helen was sent to stay with Jack's family for awhile. Harley and his wife stayed in touch with Jack's mother and father through the years and went to California to visit with them. In addition. Helen the younger and her husband visited with Helen and Ted when they were in California on business. rc

- ↑ Letter to Harley & Martha Haines, in Devoe Letters
Aug 1978.
Nanette "Nan" DeVoe wrote to Harley & Martha Haines requesting assistance with family genealogy. Mentioned "Dad" [Jack] and "Robin" [Jack's wife]. Mentioned that Teddy [Devoe] had driven to Seattle with Joel, Shirley [Jack's sister] & Nick & was impressed with Jack's vegetable garden. Letter gives impression that Nanette is either living with Jack & Robin or is living close by. Her return address is Lynnwood, WA.
