Noreen's Letter to her uncle, Harley O. Haines, and his family, Marion, Ohio

Greenwich, Ohio Sept 1, 1944

Dear Folks,

Thought I would write and tell you that Mother got over [her] operation in her mouth but is back in again. She had the goiter out this morning at 10:30 in the Mansfield General Hospital. She's pretty sore but the doctor (Dr. Reed) said the operation went fine.
Us kids start back to school this coming Tues. I suppose you kids will too or at least soon. I'll bet you wondered why we didn't write. We've been awful busy. Us girls have had to do most all of the work.
Oh! I forgot to tell you mother almost died with her first operation. She had to have penicillin which is a new medicine.
    Well come up sometime soon.
    Hoping to see you soon.

Love, Noreen

[This letter was in the collection of Martha Crum Haines (Mrs. Harley O. Haines)]

Known as "Noreen" to extended family. Noreen was riding her bike on US 224 when she was struck and killed. According to Helen's sister, Pat, Noreen was on a bike by herself and her sister, Shirley, and a friend were riding together on another bike. Noreen's mother was inconsolable after her death. Sometime after, Helen convinced Ted to sell the farm and move to California.
