Per oral history of Mabel R. Johnson, Izeal was full blooded Cherokee. She was born a slave, sold at the age of 2 to Yancy. Told that she had a brother named Peter. Never knew her parents. She died at the age of 96.

1840 US Census (VA, Mecklenburg, East District, 98th Regiment, stamped sh 395, ln 4) John Young household: 2 free white males under 5, 1 free white male 40-50, 1 free white female under 5, 4 free white females 5-10, 4 free white females 10-15, 1 free white female 20-30, 1 free white female 30-40, no free coloreds, page is turned in odd way, but it appears 8 male slaves under 10, 9 male slaves 10-24, 4 male slaves 24-35, 2 male slaves 36-55, 15 female slaves under 10, 5 female slaves 10-24, 5 female slaves 24-35 and 4 female slaves 36-55. Total in household = 71, including 26 in agriculture.

1850 Review of 1850 U.S. Census (VA, Mecklenburg Slave Schedules, 98th Regiment), the only 20/21 year old female Young slaves in the county belonged to Deonetia Young, widow of John. She owned a large number of slaves. John Young married Dianitia M. Pennington 28 Nov 1825 in Mecklenburg Co., VA, per Ancestry.com “Virginia Marriages, 1740-1850.”. Not sure if this is the last slave owner of Izeal Young, but it appears to be likely - 3/20/06.

1900 US Census (VA, Mecklenburg Co, Clarksville Dist, ED 51, sht 8, ln 74), was listed as “Izella”, and was living with her son William Yancey and his family, plus her son Charlie Yancey and her daughter Roberta Yancey. Izeal: Total children = 9; Living children = 7. Also shows she was b. VA, father and mother both b. VA.

1910 US Census (VA, Mecklenburg Co, Averett, ED 58, sh 2B), Charlie, 32; Izella, 62, Roberta, 40. Listed as living on Santee Road.
