Ivy was educated at the Royal Masonic School at Clapham Junction. from there she went to Goldsmith's College where she qualified as a teacher. She then trained under Madame Montessori. One of her first jobs was in a very poor area of Barking. The next few years she taught in a School at Acton. She left there to marry Edwin Farrant, her first cousin.
