Iva Stickel was born Iva Mae Gongaware in the family home near Ellwood City in 1923. She was the tenth of thirteen children born to parents Samuel and Lydia Loughner Gongaware. Only three of the children survive. Iva went to the Muddy Creek School in Portersville. In October of 1942, Iva married Gaylord Stickel and the couple had three children, Edith (Anderson), Roy and Viola (Smith). Viola passed away in 1973. The family lived in Portersville across from the Oak Grove Presbyterian Church, where Iva was a member. Gaylord worked at the Ellwood Works of US Steel and ran a sawmill during his time off. Iva often helped him with his work at the mill. She liked country living and made quilts in her spare time. The quilts were often given as wedding and baby gifts and some were sold at flea markets. Iva enjoyed going on long car rides to national forests and into the mountains of West Virginia. The family had a camp near Tionesta that they visited. In her spare time, Iva enjoyed collecting. Some of the things she collected were bells, Barbie dolls, coins, marbles, commemorative spoons and vases. Iva is well-known for her apple pies! After 51 years of marriage, Gaylord passed away in 1993. Iva now has four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
