Isaac Kit born 1809 Author: Huntington Volunteer Biography Pages 503/4 "History of Huntington Co., Indiana (Brant & Fuller: Chicago) 1887 Huntington City and Township Isaac Itt, one of the pioneers of Huntington County, and one of her most highly respected citizens, was born in Stark Co., OH, Dec 15, 1809. He was the fifth in a family of fifteen children, born to Jacob and Barbara (Wolf) Kitt, both natives of York Co., PA, the former of English and German, and the latter of German descent. Jacob Kitt was born about 1781, and at the age of ninetten he was married to Barbara Wolf with whom he moved to Stark Co., OH in 1804. In about the year 1850 he came to this county whither his son, Isaac Kitt, had come to the county, he settled in the woods of Clear Creek Township. He immediately went about clearing his land and in the course of a few years he had a handsome farm. In those early days a great deal of hard work naturally devolved upon him. He chopped, grubbed, burned brush, rolled logs, and in fact all kinds of hard work, which the development of a new country necessitates. He enjoys the credit of erecting the first frame barn, and of occasioning the presence of the first threshing machine and clover huller, in Clear Creek Township. Amid all the hard work during pioneer life, he found time to shoulder his gun and pursue the he found time to shoulder his gun and pursue the deer, a thing he frequently did. He remained upon the scene of his labors until March 1875 when he sold his farm and since that time he has been a resident of Huntington. He was married June 5, 1833, to Catherine Slusser, a native of Adams Co., PA born August 11, 1813. She was the daughter of Jacob and Clizabeth (Minnich) Slusser, both natives of PA of German descent. They have had born to them ten children as follows: Emeline, born Feb 8, 1835, died Feb 19, 1835; Deliah, born Mar 16, 1836; Caroline born Oct 31, 1837; Lucinda born Sept 9, 1839, she was the second white child born in Clear Creek Township. Then Matilda, born Sept 13, 1841; Jacob born Arp 18, 1843; died Sept 22, 1871; Silvanus S., born Sept 11, 1845; Elizabeth born Dec 15, 1846; Amanda J born Dec 13, 1849, and Sarah C. born May 12, 1857. Mr. Kitt is a member of the Lutheran Church and Mrs. Kitt is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics the former is a staunch Democrat. His first vote was cast for Andrew Jackson and he has tenaciously supported the principles of the Democratic party ever since. Mr. and Mrs. Kitt have now lived together over fifty three years and they now have living eight children, twenty-three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. |
