He was a bound boy (indentured servant) to a Methodist minster. During his travels with the minister he met his future wife, Sarah (Sally) Burch. When Isham finished his indenture at the age of 18, he was given the horse, bridle and saddle. He went to North Carolina to persuade Sally to become his wife, against her parents' wishes. They traveled back to Patrick, VA to settle and raise their family. They had to carve their home in the wilderness that still had bands of Indians. The Indians even stole their pig that would have provided meat for the coming winter. Isham and Sally did very well; they not only owned hundreds of acres of farm land but were also slave holders, raised a family of 7 and in 1860 Isham had a real estate wealth of $6,776 and a personal wealth of $9,510 – not bad for a bound boy! There is even an Isham Barnard Historic District in the Kibler Valley overlooking the Dan River!! |
