Per his grandson, Thomas Alton Butler, against their father's wishes, Isaac S. Butler and his brother ran away to join the Confederate Army near the onset the Civil War. Isaac was wounded in the hand and his brother was killed. Isaac buried him beside a river. When he went home he was covered with lice and his wife made him bathe and wash his clothes before she would allow him to come in the house.


Biographical Rosters of Florida's Confederate and Union Soldiers, 1861-1865, Vol. III, pp. 1201: Isaac S. Butler (b. 1832) enlisted 8/15/1862, at Monticello. He was admitted 11/02/1864, to Howard's Grove Hospital, Richmond, and furloughed 11/17/1864. He was still absent on the last roll and was paroled, 5/20/1865, at Thomasville, Georgia. He was 5'10", dark hair and skin, gray eyes.
