After his brother’s death, when he was just 18, he was sent to Jefferson City to take over the bookstore. He later purchased a shoe factory and the Jefferson City waterworks. He also entered the insurance business in St. Louis. The plantation he acquired in Palestine, TX was passed down through the family until the 1970s or 80s, but no family members ever lived there.
