Mother Sarah Frances Richards (b around 1855). On 1881 census, Hugh Pinfold (sp) age 4, b. London, Middlesex, England living with grandparents. These were William Attwell Richards (51) and Mary Ann Richards (51) who were both born at the Cape of Good Hope. WA Richards was an export merchant. The older Richards children were Sarah (27, Hugh's mother!) and Joseph (22) both b. Cape of Good Hope. Younger children were Mary (9) and Hetty (7) both b. London, Middlesex, Eng. Household had 4 servants and was at 110 Philbeach garden, London, Middlesex. Hugh joined the Kent Militia at age 21 and came to SA to flight in the Langeberg rebellion. Stationed at Taung near Kuruman where he met Gertrude May. They married around 1900. Hugh worked on the railways. Died ofa heart attack aged 56 when Vida was 14. Loved music, esp Richard Crookes.

Hugh appears on the 1891 England census, where Fanny lied and said she was a widow. Hugh joined the Kent militia in the 1890s and also ended up in South Africa fighting the Boer war, where he met and married Gertrude May Willmore. Marchant joined the Royal Navy.
