As a lad, Hugh achieved mention in the local press from time to time. He was a member of something called The Sunbeam Society which promoted kindness, purity and honour, and passed some exams - see the gallery below. Also, either he, or his father after whom he was named, regularly submitted jokes to the Prize Joke Competition and many were published! Examples of the jokes can be found on the Family Page.

Hugh was a bookkeeper before his death at 25 years old (ref: grave document).
