Hugh and Bridget, both born in Ireland, lived, once married, in Burnley's shopping centre. They kept flitting: see the list of addresses below. St. James St. and Standish St. are the traditional main shopping streets of the town.

You can see how Hugh's livelihood progressed. He was resourceful and must have worked very hard.

  • 1861 — Hugh pre-marriage 7 Roper St. (from census) “cotton factory hand”
  • 1863 — Park Lane (from marriage certificate) “Plasterer’s Labourer”
  • 1872 — 25 Mill Lane (from Worrall’s Directory of Burnley) Beer Retailer -- Mill Lane became Bridge Street
  • 1879 — 145 St. James St. (from Barrett’s directory Burnley & District) “Clothes Dealer”
  • 1881 — 145 St. James St. (from census) Hugh described as “Jeweller & General Dealer”
  • 1887 — 124 St. James St. (from Barrett's directory of Burnley & District under "watchmakers & jewelers"): “Dealer”
  • 1890 — 64 Standish St. (from Barrett’s directory Burnley & District) “Jeweller”
  • 1891 — 36 St. James St. (from census) Cross in column “neither employer nor employed”
  • 1893 — 36 St. James St. (from Barrett’s directory Burnley & District) “Jeweller”
  • 1889 - 124 St. James St. (from their daughter Agnes' birth certificate) "Jeweller (master)"
  • 1896 — 64 Standish St. (from Barrett’s directory Burnley & District) “Jeweller”
  • 1901 — 12 Cureden St. (from census -- widowed Bridget)
  • 1902 — 12 Cureden St. (from Barrett’s directory Burnley & District -- widowed Bridget)
  • 1911 — 7 Richard St. (from census -- widowed Bridget)
  • 1915 - 6 Hinton St. (Bridget's residence at death - from grave document)

Hugh advertised in the press a good deal, and a selection of his adverts can be found on his person page. I do not know whether he trained as a jeweller before leaving Ireland, or what skills he had, but he certainly bettered himself successfully.

Photographs of Members of this Family

I cannot be certain who is who, so I have created a gallery of all available Murtagh/Mullin photographs: (I have many others of Agnes)

Hugh Murtagh - whether father or son I cannot tell for sure - regularly entered the local paper's Prize Joke Competition, and the Cricket Anecdote Competition: examples below!
