Hugh Innes was married to Hannah Eggleston of James City Co., VA in 1772 (recorded in the Virginia Gazette). He died in Franklin Co., VA in 1797 leaving a will naming 5 children: Hugh, Harry, James (my ancestor), Elizabeth Eggleston Innes, and Margaret Mackey Innes. The sons moved to Kentucky to the Revolutionary War bounty warrant lands inherited from their father.

Scottish records show Hugh Innes was christened 12 Aug 1729 in Morayshire, Scotland. He was the son of William Innes and Margaret McKay (Mackey). William was the son of Berowald Innes and his wife Jean Falconer, daughter of Colin Falconer, Bishop of Moray and Lilias Rose. Colin Falconer's ancestry can be traced in the Scot's Peerage and through his great-grandmother Douglas, it leads back to the Stewarts and Robert the Bruce among others. It ties to many of the noble Scottish families and through Joan Beaufort back to Edward III of England.

Hugh Innes, Burgess, 1700s Posted by: Ray Isbell Date: April 13, 2001 at 02:55:15 In Reply to: Innes of Virginia, 1700s by Ray of 795

Regarding Hugh Innes, born about 1720-35 probably in Virginia, died 1797 Franklin Co., Virginia, was he the son of Robert Innes, the son of Hugh Innes (b. c1635 in Scotland) who immigrated to Virginia?

Hugh Innes was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, 1769-74, representing Henry County. Was Captain of the militia of Franklin Co., 1763 was a judge in Franklin County was Sheriff of Franklin Co., 1787-89 He died 3-22-1797 in Franklin Co.

Was he the same Hugh Innes who witnessed a deed from Joseph Bird to Wm. Hunter in Pittsylvania Co., 4-25-1776?

Hugh Innes of Fairfax Co., Bedford Co., Franklin Co., & Henry Co., VA. left a will dated April 1797 Henry Co., VA, giving Sarah Turley land, a horse, other items, and provisions for as long as she lived in his house and for a year thereafter. She was the widow of Peter Turley and probably the mother of Peter Turley Jr. b. c1753 who moved to Kershaw Co., S.C.

In 1787 Hugh Innes was a witness for Sarah Turley, widow of Peter. On 1-1-1799 Sarah Turley sold 100 acres in Franklin Co., VA on Crabtree Fork of Snow Creek, land which abutted Bearald (Beryl?) Innes. Witnesses were Robert Innes and Hugh Innes "Jr." (I assume the son of the Hugh who had died). Perhaps Bearald was Hugh's widow and mother or Robert and Hugh Jr?

Sarah (Innes) Turley had married 1740-60 Peter Turley Jr. probably after the death of his first wife (Miss Lewis?). Peter Turley died 1781. He was the son of John Turley and Elizabeth Semmes who married second to John West and third Charles Broadwater.
