He studied medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland and was apparently stranded there for a time by the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. He was a student of and corresponded with the noted Scottish schoolmaster Donald Robertson in Virginia, who perhaps inspired him to study in Scotland. Francis Thornton appears to have been his second wife, as he first married Janet "Jannie" Ritchie (a contemporary letter says he was "of Port Royal" at the time).(Archibald McCall, George McCall and Joseph S.
