Harry served in Europe, U.S. Army, W.W. II, 1943-46. Rank:Staff Sgt. Harry was a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, PA,BS Mech. Eng., 1943. He also erned his MA in Math from W&J. He tookwork toward doctorate at the U. of Pittsburgh, and had finished thisexcept for defending his thesis. He taught at W.&J. for a number ofyears. He also taught at Washington W., St. Louis, MO, and was head ofthe Math Dept. at Covenant College, Lookout Mountain, TN. He startedtheir Math Dept. He died after open heart surgery for a congenitaldefect. He was born with a defective valve in his heart--the valve hadtwo cusps instead of three, and kept narrowing until it would open onlyto a pencil point. This didn't stop him from being active in sportsuntil the last year of his life. He enjoyed playing volleyball with thestudents, was a golfer, bowler, etc. He was a Presbyterian, and taughtS.S. classes. He was a ruling elder in the Reformed Presbyterian Church,Evangelical Synod. He was much loved by his students, who considered himone of the best teachers they ever had. (One student who is a cousin tothe preparer of this information [Joyce Hughes] stated that he often ate with the students to get better aquainted with them.) In his memory, the H. Harrison Hughes Academic Computer Center wasestablished at Covenant College, and it was dedicated on 29 Oct 1982.
