Homer graduated from Lima High School, 1907. His intention was to become an architect, and he did some designing for a Mr. Leech ca. 1908. Mr.Leech invented a valveless motor, which he showed to Henry Ford. Dickinvested $3,000 in helping Leech develop the motor, and ended up losingall of it. This was a valuable lesson about investing he learned at age17! One building he designed was built in Delphos, and it was stillstanding in the 1970's. This career was cut short when he was on aschool outing, and there was an accident of the interurban train on whichthey were riding. He was left-handed, and lost part of a finger and hisleft hand was damaged. Dick then joined his father in the jewelrybusiness. Their firm became Hughes & Son Jewelers. The store was in thepublic square in Lima. Dick became a diamond expert. He was so expertthat when a lady customer walked into their store he could tell from theback of the store if her diamonds were real. In 1952, he retired andsold the jewelry store. He later became administrator of the LimaConvalescent Home 1958-63, of which he had been a trustee, on variousboards, etc. In fact, Charlotte had suggested the site which was chosenfor building the home. He had a hand in the planning, design, grounds,etc. of the home. He also served as president of the Lima ConvalescentHome Foundation, and participated in fund raising for the home. Dick wason the Board of Trustees of the Allen Co. Historical Society in Lima, andwas involved in the building of the new museum at its present site on W.Market St. He was also a member of Rotary club, 1916 on. He wasPresident of the Rotary Club 1943-44. He was involved in many other civic activities, and was on various boards.
