His sister, Dorothy, stated he was married but had no children. She thought the sawdust from the business caused cancer in both of her brothers and led to their deaths. The home she used for vacations in Naples, FL had been Herbert's.

Roy Larson told Marilyn that Herb was living in Naples, but went up to Chicago to see Dorothy and sometime while in Chicago he sucumbed to cancer. Herb was in so much pain, he would scream for more morphine, but Dorothy was careful not to give him too much. It was an awful death. (Marilyn Beets 6/05)
