Herbert Morgan Homes was born in Lampasas, Texas. His draft card indicates that he was born in 1895, but census records and death certificate indicate that he was born about 1898. His parents were not married until Aug 5 1896 making a bith date of 1897 or 98 more probable. In 1910 he was living with his uncle in New Orleans according to the Census. The 1910 census also has a Herbert M Homes age 13 living with his mother Nella and Step-father James C. Wight in Denver Colorado in April 1910. The 1916 New Orleans directory indicates that he was working as a clerk and still living with his Uncle. The 1918 directory lists him as a clerk for the American Can Company, and shows him living at 5000 Prytania Street in the residence of his in-laws the Napps. In 1920 we find him operating a garage on Prytania Street. Five years later he was selling batteries at 1770 St. Charles Avenue. By this time he had moved down the street from his in-laws and was living at 4819 Prytania St.
