Lieutenant Commander Herbert Farquhar Atkins R.N. came back from the China station to Greenwich, England, shortly before 1936 (family letters), retired with DSO and DSC from the navy in 1957 and died 1965 (naval archive). “Capt. Herbert Farquhar Atkins, R. N., died, aged 59, 4aug1964. He was a good all-rounder…whose honest and forthright opinions occasionally embroiled him with higher authority…In 1922 he specialized in engineering and became one of the top flight of marine engineers in the country” (Times). Bef 23feb1963 Capt. Herbert Farquhar Atkins, aged 58, from 1954-58 assistant Director of Naval Intelligence, was dismissed as chief engineer of Vickers Nuclear Engineering for criticising the choice of reactors for a ship (Times).
