Birth name: Henry C. Steffee
The son of Maryland-born John & Eva (Krumrine) Steffee and twin brother to Adam Steffee, he was born in York County, Pennsylvania, despite what his death certificate maintains, as reported by his twin brother. In 1860, he was living with and or working for Edward Darone in Dover Township, York County, although his family lived in neighboring Conewago Township. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and dark eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York County October 24, 1862, as a substitute for his boss Edward Darone, mustered into federal service at York November 8 as a private with Co. C, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.
In 1865, he moved to Canton, Stark County, Ohio, where, for reasons unknown, he changed his name to Henry C. Stephens, the name by which he lived for the rest of his life. He married Elizabeth Ann Lutz and fathered John (b. 03/17/69), William (b. 09/20/71), David (b. 08/30/73), Edy (b.04/10/78), Mary (b. 02/18/80), Emma (b. 01/22/82), Floyd L. (b. 07/21/83), and Jacob (b. 05/30/86). He and Elizabeth divorced in 1890, and he was apparently treated for mental illness during that time frame. He married Freda A. Siegle September 24, 1896, in Canton, Ohio, and fathered Walter (b. 05/03/94), Milford & Milton (b. 02/13/97), Lester (b. 1900), Netta & Sadie E. (b. 1907 - Sadie married a Tessanne), and Lily (b. 1909).
