James:

I read your post on the Scarburgh Family Genealogy at GenForum. Can you please explain the relationship between William Scarborough 1675/6 and the Virginia Scarburgh's?

I have just started tracing back the Scarburghs's on Accomack Co., VA to England and end at Henry Scarburgh b. abt 1560 Scarburgh of Walsham, Norfolk, England and his wife Elizabeth. Their son Edmund b. Dec 25, 1584 d. abt Jan 9, 1633/4 in England; his wife was Hannah Pott. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Herb Frantz Street, MD

Scarborough, Henry - Not dated - Rec, 26 May 1676 - To Grandmother Ann Charlton cattle & increase for life then to nephews Bennony & Jonathan West, sons of Maj. John West. To aunt, Mrs Matilda West. To nephew John West the younger. To nephew Scarborough West. Uncle John West Ex'r. To Hatton Hill, son of Robert Hill. Witt: William Towers, Robert Watsone - p.6"

For a great while now it has been mistakenly believed that Jane, Mary or Elizabeth Littleton was the wife of Col. Edmund Scarborough. The above information shows clearly that it is much more likely that Ann Charlton, born about 1621, is the true wife of Col. Edmund Scarborough. Ann's father, Capt. Stephen Charleton can be found along with Col. Edmund Scarborough sitting in the Virginia House of Burgesses. The above information was found on page 8 of that book. - Michael D.
