After his graduation from high school at Mt. Holly, AR, HCL attended El Dorado Junior College, where he was president of the student body.

According to Henry Carlton Lindsey, THE MARK LINDSEY HERITAGE (Brownwood, TX, 1982), HCL and wife Natille met while students at Ouachita Baptist Univ. in Arkadelphia, AR. From 1952-3, HCL was asst. prof. of speech at Ouachita. He served as chair of the speech dept. at Samford Univ., Baylor Univ., Miss. State Univ. for Women, and Georgetown College of the Air Force. He was academic vice-president of Howard Payne Univ., 1970-4.

The couple married at First Baptist church in Pine Bluff, which was pastored by Natille Pierce's father.

WACO NEWS TRIBUNE, 3 May 1963, has an article about HCL, when he was named director of Baylor's drama division. This notes that he came to Baylor from the Kansas State Teachers College, and was chosen from among 54 applicants.

I have a letter dated 13 June 1963 from HCL's brother Benjamin D. Lindsey expressing his pride in HCL for receiving the Baylor position.

A biography of HCL is in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA, 1980-1. This says that HCL received a B.A. from Ouachita College in 1948, and an M.A. from LSU in 1951. His Ph.D. (1962) was from Univ. of Denver. From 1952-3, he taught at Ouachita, and from 1953-6 chaired the Drama Dept. of Howard College in Birmingham. He was an education specialist for the Air Force from 1956-8, and chaired the speech dept. of Georgetown College (KY) from 1958-61. From 1961-3, he was director of the Kansas State Extension College, and from 1963-4, he chaired the drama division of Baylor. In 1964 he became academic vice-president at Ouachita, holding that position until 1969. In 1969-70, he was chair of the speech dept. of Mississippi State College for Women. From 1970-4, he was academic vice-president of Howard Payne College in Brownwood, TX. He was a retired lieutenant colonel of the Air Force, having received the Bronze Star with an oak leaf cluster for bravery. The biography notes a number of plays and other works authored by HCL.

I have obituaries for HCL from two unidentified newspapers. These note that he died age 70 on 30 April 1988, and was a member of First Baptist church, Atlanta, TX, and a retired lieut. col. of the Air Force. Funeral was on 2 May at Hyanner Funeral Home in Atlanta, with burial at Rosehaven Cem., Brookhaven, MS. Survivors were widow Natille, and children John of DeQueen, AR, Mark of Ft. Worth, TX, and Denise (Davis) of Granbury, TX, as well as sister Helen Compere of Houston.

COUSHATTA CITIZEN (7 Oct. 1982) has an article entitled "Red River Native Completes Book," with information about HCL's book tracing descendants of his great-great-great grandfather Mark Lindsey. This identifies HCL as dean of the general college at Howard Payne University, Brownwood, TX.

Unless otherwise noted, all information about the children and grandchildren of this family is from MARK LINDSEY HERITAGE.
