Y. 1909 Page 232-231 Henry Hooker (John 6, Elijah 5, John 4, John 3, Samuel 2, Thomas 1), son of John and Polly (Ives) Hooker, of Meriden, Conn., b. July 7, 1797, at Meriden, Conn.; m. Nov. 23, 1823, Melinda Canfield, daughter o John and Rebecca (Smith) Canfield of Morristown, N. Y., b. Nov. 30, 1803, at Champion, N. Y. They lived at Morristown, N. Y. Mr. Henry Hooker was a man of sterling integrity, thorough in business, enterprising and supporting all improvements of the time for the good of the town. Shortly after his marriage Mr. Hooker settled upon a farm near the village of Morristown, N. Y., and soon after engaged in mercantile business as one of the firm of Miller, Hooker & Co. He also held many public offices of the town from Justice of the Peace to Supervisor. He took an active part in politics and became a Republican upon the information of that party. He was appointed collector of customs of the port (Morristown) by President Tyler and reappointed by Presidents Lincoln and Grant. In his early life he became identified with the Episcopal church and was Warden for many years. He died at Morristown, N. Y., Dec. 6, 1882. She died at Morristown, N. Y., March 7, 1879. |
