Ancestor needs confirmation. This individual is the most likely candidate.

The search for information on Michael Hartmann's parents and immigration hits a brick wall for many reasons. 1. Passenger lists for ships sailing from Bremen (where most Germans departed) between 1832 and 1872 were destroyed for lack of space. 2. Bavaria has refused the LDS microfilming operation of vital statistics.

A search of the East, West, and South areas of Chicago found the 1850 Census for South Chicago (pg 124b) has German immigrants Henry Hartman, age 45, laborer and Mary, age 44. Their children are Sophia ,17; Charlotte,9; Caroline,4; and Henry,1. The last two children were born in IL, which means immigration was between 1841 and 1846. If Michael was part of this family, he would have been 19-24 years old at the time of immigration, 28 at the time of the Census, the oldest son, and may have moved to another Chicago or IN location. Michael named his second daughter, Sophia (b.1866 in IL), which could have been after his sister.

His obituary was found online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mennobit/index.html, acollection of obituaries from the the HERALD of TRUTH, a Mennonitenewspaper of note. On the 22nd of September, in Allen county, Ohio, of rheumatism in the chest, Bro. Peter Hartman, aged 71 years and 2 months less one day.He was buried on the 24th at the Riely Creek Meeting- house. Heleaves a wife and three children to mourn his departure; but we hopetheir loss is his eternal gain. This aged brother was a member of the Mennonite church, and a defender of the truth. Most of the time for three months he was confined to bed, but bore his affliction with christian patience and resignation. We believe that he made a happy transition into that celestial abode, and is now resting from all his labors, where pain and affliction are known no more. Funeral remarks were delivered by Christian Cul, Abraham Steiner and Christian P.Steiner from Rev. 14:13. D. BOESINGER.

Peter and Hannah had three children alive in 1871, according to his obituary. The family moved from the Ashland Co., OH area to the AllenCo., OH area around 1850.
