Henry Chapman was born on 4th August 1830 at Flitton in Bedfordshire, son of Francis and Esther Chapman. The 1841 census finds Henry living in Flitton with his parents and siblings. His mother appears to have died some time between 1841 and 1851, and the 1851 census finds him living apparently with his father, stepmother and brother in Flitton, and working as an agricultural labourer.
On Christmas Eve 1853 Henry was married in the town of Luton, a few miles south of Flitton, to Sarah Marshall. At the time of their marriage he was working as a bricklayer. Less than seven months later, Sarah died, aged 30, being buried in Luton in July 1854.
The following year, Henry emigrated to Canada. He married again in 1860, with his second wife being Sarah Thew, who had been born in Ontario (or Upper Canada as it was at the time). They married at Whitby in Ontario, and then settled in Uxbridge, Ontario, where they appear in each census from 1871 to 1901. Henry worked variously as a farmer, mason and gardener. They appear to have had at least four children.
Sarah died in Uxbridge in 1904. Henry survived her by five years and died on 17th December 1909, aged 79. He died at Nichol township in Wellington County, Ontario, over seventy miles west of Uxbridge.
