Deryck was tutored on the Millet farm by Mr. O'Shea from Ireland at the time of the Troubles. A good teacher, he prepared Deryck for high school in Edmonton and the University of Alberta where he began a BSc at 26 encouraged by a family friend, Ned Corbett, Director of Adult Education there. He graduated in Engineering and joined the RCE to go to war.
